Story #16: First Day of Sixth Grade

First Day of Sixth Grade
Tomorrow was the first big day for the sixth grader, Billy. It was gonna be the first time he was gonna walk into a bigger school, meet new friends, and play a sport. Billy used to live in Hawaii, but then his dad was transferred to a job in the Quad Cities.
Now that he is here in Illinois, he had to get all new clothes. In Hawaii, he could wear shorts and a t-shirt every day due to their warm climate. However, here the weather gets bitter cold and requires a warmer wardrobe.
He told his mom that "It is ridiculous that he had to leave his friends, why couldn't it wait six more years, and that he misses his old home."
His mom replied as " I am sorry, but if your dad gets moved then we have to go with."
Billy decided to get everything ready for the next big day of school, and was really nervous since he's never been to Illinois before. He doesn't know if he will have friends, where he's gonna sit for lunch, or who he was going to talk to. Billy got nervous very easily, and so he got butterflies in his stomach, started to get a headache, and it got so bad he started to cry.
Billy got ready for bed and tried to fall asleep, but he couldn't.  He kept thinking about everything that could wrong. He thought about how he wouldn't be able to sit anywhere at lunch, because people would boot him and say that's their spot, and how he wouldn't be able to find his classes, get pushed around in the hallways, and get called mean names.
Finally, Billy fell asleep and woke up the next day trying to figure out what he was going to wear. He put on a pullover and running shorts, looked at himself in the mirror and thought to himself "What am I wearing?!" He took his pullover off, put on an American Eagle shirt and American Eagle tan shorts, and called it good. When he walked down his steps his mom asked him if he did the five main things in the morning; which are brush your teeth, putting deodorant on, put cologne on, do your hair, and eat breakfast.
Billy's reply was "I haven't gotten that far yet, give me a break!"
Billy's mother replied back at him, "Don't be mad at me we moved here. There's nothing I can do about it!"
Billy came back downstairs and apologized to his mother and said he was sorry, but he couldn't help it. He just didn't feel good. After he completed his four main things, he grabbed his school bag and off they went!
When Billy and his mom arrived at the school, he was getting out of the car and "Bllleeeeaaauuurrrrgghhh!" Billy just threw up all over himself, in front of everyone, and all down the car. He hurried up, threw all his stuff back in the car, and started crying. He was so embarrassed that he told his mom to "get back in the car and go home now!" When they got home, he cleaned himself up, ate, and went back to bed.
He woke up the next day and decided to try to go to school again. When he got there, he had three boys walk up to him and ask what his name is, where he came from, and why did he move here. They showed him around the school, and when they were showing him around Billy was just looking around thinking how it was so much bigger than his old school. Billy told his friends that this school is about the size of his town!
His friends Alphonso, BJ, and Max all looked at each other and said "Oh my gosh! You lived in a small town then!"
Billy replied and said "No, it really wasn't a small town. It's just that this town is a lot bigger." By the end of the day, he made fifteen friends and was fine by the fact that he moved, but still missed his other friends.

  10. This was really relatable to me because I moved to Erie in 6th grade and that's sorta how it happened. I was super nervous but I didn't throw up and I made a few friends.

  13. I think we have all had that nervous feeling going somewhere we don't know a single person. It can be so frightening, no matter how old or young you are. Good job capturing those emotions and what it's like to feel that way. So realistic when he just wants to go back to bed!

  14. I can see this being retable for those who've moved to Erie. It's odd coming to a new school and meeting people.
