The Big Day
One day before the big day for Jill and Kimmy, they were doing what they normally do after school, practice basketball. They had the big basketball tryouts tomorrow, and they were both really nervous. Both of them have been best friends for awhile and they have played the same position in basketball since they could remember. Jill wasn't as good as Kimmy was due to a knee injury the past year. She was a little scared about not making it because of something going wrong during tryout.
Jill was a little more nervous than Kimmy because she doesn't want to embarrass herself in front of the coach, or get turned down. All she was thinking of was negatives about the tryouts. Kimmy on the other hand was only nervous about not showing up on time, which was an issue with her. Kimmy has never showed up to any big event on time, she can barely get to school on time, which made her nervous about tryouts. Both had too much on their minds when practicing that they didn't talk much about how they felt about it, or what they were going to do to impress the coaches tomorrow.
After a good night rest, they woke up for an ordinary day of school. This is one thing both girls do not enjoy, they have most classes together always getting into some kind of trouble for talking when the teacher is talking. During study hall, all of the girls trying out for the team were talking with Jill and Kimmy. They all could tell that those two were nervous. One of the girls walked up to Jill asking, "You both do know that only one spot is open for your position right? Not both of you can get it." Jill shook her head, she never thought about that she remember the coach saying something about it, but it totally flew over her head that only one could receive the jersey. Her nerves were building up inside because she knew that she was most likely to be the one who doesn't get the spot due to her past knee injury. Jill pulled Kimmy to the side needed to talk to her about it. Jill said, "Only one of us can get the spot Kimmy! What's going to happen? Basketball won't be the same for us."
Kimmy got a shock look on her face as she realized that Jill was right. Both of them were thinking about going up against each other, competing for the thing they loved the most. Jill was more worried about it ruining their friendship, but all the worries had to go away as the last bell rang. It was time, the time they were both waiting for. They got dressed and went to the gym where the coach was standing waiting for all the player to get out so they could all warm up. As soon as they were all warmed up and the coach gave directions that each spot had a different drill to perform, the first ones up was Jill and Kimmy's group, the posts. It looked like there was only three of them trying out and only one spot was open as they knew before. The other girl Carissa wasn't as good as them. So they only had each other to compete against. After going through their drills in front of the coach a couple of times they were dismissed and would get a text message tonight, so Jill and Kimmy both went over to Jill's after.
Arriving back to Jill's house they both ate dinner without having each others phones next to them. They ate rather quickly anxious to hear the news. After dinner they were talking about how no matter who got the spot they were going to stay friends and this wouldn't come in between them, and they would only support each other after it. When the time came, the phone went off. Both looked at their phones and realized that they both got the text saying that they were both on the team. Confused at what the results came thinking that only one of them could have made it, they read further down and it said that he was putting both on team to split up time played half and half because of both their skills being equivalent at practice. Jill and Kimmy were relieved to say that there was going to be another year of them playing basketball together.

ReplyDeleteGlad they both made it! Nice job telling the story - the pacing was appropriate and it flowed well. For some reason (maybe it's the computer screen? Maybe I'm getting too old?) every time you has Jill and Kimmy's names next to one another, I read it as Kill and Jimmy. Yipes!
